Rural schools get a connectivity deadline
Four hundred sites, and eighteen months to do it.
The education ministry has set an eighteen month deadline to connect four hundred rural schools to the internet.
The schools were chosen because they sit within reach of an existing mobile tower or a fibre route, which keeps the cost of each connection down.
What schools get
Each school will receive a connection, a set of laptops for a computer room and solar power to run them. Teachers will be trained over two school holidays.
The ministry will publish a list of the schools each quarter, showing which are connected. Head teachers said the power supply mattered as much as the connection, since many of the schools are not on the grid.
