Maize prices settle after a volatile month

Maize prices at the main grain markets held steady last week for the first time since June, according to the millers association.
Prices swung sharply through July and August as traders waited to see the size of the harvest and whether imports would be allowed.
Why prices steadied
Millers say two things settled the market: the harvest estimate published at the start of the month, and confirmation that the grain marketing board would release stock from its reserves if prices rose above an agreed level.
Bakers and millers said they would hold the price of a loaf and of maize meal for now. Farmers groups asked for the reserve price to be published in advance each season.
